(Antalya, Turkey) April 8th, 2011 – After 5 days of competition the Judo and Powerlifting events are finished, as well as the round-robin portion of the Goalball tournament at the 4th IBSA World Championships and Games.  Canadian Powerlifters won 1 silve, 1 bronze, and set 1 masters world record, while the Canadian Judo players placed 5th, 9th and 11th, and both the men’s and women’s Goalball teams have qualified for the quarter-finals.

 

Adam Bury won bronze in the men’s 100kg Powerlifting event on the strength of personal bests in both squat (220kg) and deadlift (237.5kg) as well as benching 142.5kg.  Tim Ekert won the silver medal in men’s 125kg Powerlifting by lifting an all around personal best by squatting 262.5kg, benching 247.5kg, and completing an impressive deadlift of 272.5kg – just over 600 pounds!  Rob Truchon placed 4th in the men’s 90kg powerlifting with a squat of 205kg, a deadlift of 180kg, and a masters 1 (age 40+) world record bench of 157.5kg.

 

Tim Reese placed 5th in men’s minus 100kg Judo event with a record of 2 wins and 2 loses, and his loss in the second bronze medal match was by decision after he fought the former Paralympic champion for 8 minutes to a scoreless draw.   Tony Walby placed 9th in plus 100kg Judo event with a record of 1 win and 2 losses, while Justin Karn placed 11th in minus 60kg event also with 1 win and 2 losses.

 

The Canadian Men’s Goalball Team started the tournament 5 – 0 before being edged out by Sweden  5 – 4 and Turkey 7 -5 to finish with a record of 5 wins and 2 losses to finish 3rd in pool B.  The men will now play the USA tomorrow morning Saturday April 9th at 01:20 PST and 4:20 EST in the quarter-finals.

 

The Canadian Women’s Goalball Team came out of the round-robin undefeated and sit first in their division with a perfect 6 and 0 record.  They are the top seed in pool X and will play the Ukraine in tomorrow’s quarter-finals at 11:20 PM Friday April 7th EST / 02:00 AM Saturday April 8th EST.
